Article Title
Troubleshooting FTP Connection failures
Publish Date
Nov-10-2004

Description/Symptoms
This article will assist technicians in troubleshooting FTP connection problems while doing backups, system log retrieval, and upgrades on the SX-200 ICP.
Symptoms include the SX-200 ICP "hanging" after initiating an FTP connection and error messages indicating FTP connection failures.

Body/Solutions
NOTE: Third party FTP servers do not work properly in a Windows environment where the IIS service is active. IIS must be stopped before the third party server will work.

NOTE: Windows XP with SP2 has a built-in active firewall that will block FTP access to the PC. See Knowledge Base article # 04-3849-00275 "FTP Database backup not working after Windows XP SP2 installed."

The two main steps in troubleshooting FTP connection problems are as follows:

      • Verifying FTP connections
      • Verifying login information

To verify FTP connections:

1. For 1.x systems, log in to Maintenance and select SYSTEM - SHOW - IP CONFIG.
For 2.x systems, log in to CDE and access form 47, then sub-form 1.

2. Check that the IP address, username, and password are correct.
Note: If the IP address of the FTP server is on a different network than the SX-200 ICP, verify gateway programming.

Note: If you are using an FTP server program on your laptop (such as GuildFTP), verify that the static IP address of your laptop matches the IP address programmed in the SX-200 ICP for the FTP server.

To verify login information:

For FTP servers on the same network as the ICP:
1. Open a DOS prompt
2. Type ftp <the IP address of your FTP server> (for example: ftp 192.168.1.2) even if it's the same laptop on which the FTP server is running. If the FTP server is running, you will be prompted for your username and password.
3.Enter the user name and password information that was given to the SX-200 ICP.

    • If your login fails, investigate the account setup on the FTP Server.
    • If your login succeeds, try to send a file to the server. If the file is refused, it is likely that permissions have not been set correctly on the account you're using for the SX-200 ICP. The user account must have Read, Write, List, and Create privileges.
For FTP servers on a different network than the ICP:
    • Connect to the command line secure telnet port (2002) and issue a ping command in the following format:
          ping "192.168.61.2",3
The ICP will attempt to ping that IP address 3 times. If no attempt is successful, issue a ping command to the gateway address that the ICP has listed in its IP configuration and forward the results to your network administrator.
